Chapter 27: The Sale
"Then I'll find a buyer who doesn't want to leave," I said.
My father almost smiled.
"With what? A label maker?"
He walked out to his car, and somebody held an umbrella over him, though it wasn't raining.
The old owner lived on a houseboat at the north end of Sauvie Island.
He'd sold seventy percent of the team in August and kept the rest, because his wife said he'd die of boredom without it.
He was eighty-one, with a bad hip and a cardigan with holes in both elbows.
He'd hired me three years ago after I told him his players ate like raccoons.
He opened the door before I knocked, holding the newspaper with the City Hall photo on the front.
"I wondered when you'd come," he said.
His wife made coffee. Lulu sat on the dock with Johnny, dropping crumbs to the ducks.
I laid it out on his little kitchen table.
My father wanted to sell his seventy percent to a group in Houston. The league had to approve any sale.
