The league office was on the thirty-first floor of a glass tower on Sixth Avenue.
The boardroom table was longer than my kitchen.
Thirty-one owners sat around it, with leather folders and the faces of men who'd bought things all their lives.
The commissioner sat at the head. Silver tie. Reading glasses he kept taking off.
I sat near the foot, in a navy dress Stevie had made me buy, with my binder on my knees.
Stevie sat beside me with her phone face down.
The security man sat in the back row, against the wall, in a plain gray suit.
There was no pin on his lapel.
He'd resigned on Monday. He'd flown on his own ticket.
Johnny was in Portland with the team. Game five of the second round was the next night.
He'd texted me at six, New York time.
"You don't need me there. You never did. Call me after."
My father sat halfway up the table with two lawyers.
Kinsley sat behind him, perfectly still.
The commissioner opened his folder.
"Mr. Vanderhoff. The city of Portland has made findings about your club's attendance reporting. Before we vote on any sale, the board would like to hear from you."
