Chapter 20: A Different Manager

The new manager was a tall woman in her forties with a tablet, a calm voice, and no history with Aurora at all.

Park Mi-sook introduced her at four in the afternoon, in the same office where Ha-jun had met Seung-ho.

"She starts at the press conference," Park said. "Until then, Moon Seung-ho hands over everything."

Seung-ho handed over everything.

He gave the woman the white work phone, the schedule binder, and the van keys.

Last, he took the black phone from his inside pocket, powered it down, and laid it flat on Park's desk, next to the Aurora paper.

"That is the only number Director Choi has for me," he said. "The only thing I ever sent him from it was: "Not yet." You can have it checked."

"I will," Park said. "Thank you."

"I'd like to hand in my letter too."

He placed a new sheet beside the phone, a clean one this time, three lines long.

The new manager looked at Ha-jun with open curiosity.

Ha-jun looked back and lifted one eyebrow.

"I'm easier than I look," he said.

"I've read your file," she said. "You're not."

Park coughed into her fist, and Ha-jun suspected she was laughing.

By eight that night the two of them were alone in 1204.

The photographers had gone home with the cold.

Ha-jun sat on the end of the bed in a loose gray sweater.
