Chapter 15: The Dress
The dress had forty-one buttons down the back, and I could reach none of them.
It was Wednesday, the eleventh of November, at a quarter past ten at night.
I stood in the dressing room behind the main hall with the door shut.
The room was a long narrow place of mirrors and bulbs, where the museum's speakers wait before they go out to the donors.
The gala was in three days.
The shop had delivered the dress that afternoon in a flat white box.
I had carried it down the back stairs after closing, to see if I could stand in it.
It was midnight-blue satin, cut low in the front and close through the waist, with a full skirt that ended just below the knee.
The buttons were tiny, covered in the same satin, and they ran from the nape of my neck to the base of my spine.
I had tried for ten minutes with my arms bent behind me, and then given up.
I picked up the radio from the shelf.
"Sam," I said. "Dressing room. Bring your flashlight."
He was there in a minute.
He knocked once and came in, in his security blazer, with the flashlight on his belt and his cap in his hand.
Then he saw me, and the cap fell on the floor.
I stood in front of the long mirror with the dress hanging open down my back and the bulbs making a halo round me.
The satin hugged every curve I have.
Under it I wore a black garter belt and sheer black stockings.
I had bought them on Monday on my lunch hour, for a reason I had not yet explained to myself.
"Lock the door," I said.
He turned the key.
"Come here. Do the buttons."
He crossed the room in three strides and stood behind me.
His hands came up to my neck, big and warm, and he found the first button and slid it from its loop.
