Chapter 27: The Numbers
I walked up the three steps onto the stage.
The auctioneer was a gray-haired man in a bow tie, standing by the big screen where the lots were shown.
"Could you put this up, please?" I asked him in Italian, and held out my phone.
He looked at Raffaele.
"Let the American show us her holiday photos."
The auctioneer plugged my phone into his laptop.
The screen behind the stage went white.
Then it filled with a picture of a dark cellar rack, and a bottle lying in it.
On the glass shoulder, in white wax pencil, a number.
0417.
In the corner of the photo, the date and time. Four in the afternoon, the day before the cellar was broken open.
"This is the Ferri cellar in La Morra," I said, to the room. "Every bottle there gets a number on the glass the day it's laid down. Nobody outside the family knows that."
I turned to Raffaele.
"Turn your bottle around. Show them the shoulder."
He didn't move.
"Signore," said the auctioneer. "If you would."
The cameras were on him.
He turned the bottle.
