Chapter 26: The Fair
"Anonymous," Tommaso's mother said. "In Alba, anonymous has a gold B on it."
"We don't know that," said her son.
"I know it," she said. "I've known that woman for forty years."
I pulled the laptop across the table and searched the Italian trademark register.
It took four minutes.
In July, a company called Bellandi Vini of Alba had registered a design.
A hill of vines in brown ink, facing left.
Our hill, turned around.
"They registered it," I said. "Your hill. The Ferris never did, because it's been yours since 1922 and nobody needed a paper."
"So now our label copies theirs," said his brother.
"On paper. And my new label has the same hill, with foxes in it."
His mother sat down slowly.
Nonna reached over with her good hand and covered hers.
"Paper," Nonna said, "is only a problem for people who can't read it."
"We're banned from the hall."
"The Ferri estate is banned," I said. "Ponte isn't."
I turned the laptop around again.
