Chapter 25: Nonna in Piedmont
I came down the ladder so fast I missed the last rung.
Tommaso came down after me, pulling his sweater on inside out.
We crossed the courtyard with straw in our hair.
There was no hiding it.
Nobody tried to.
"Nonna. What are you doing here?"
"Standing," she said. "Which the doctors said I'd never do again. Kiss me."
I kissed her.
She smelled like the airplane and her same gardenia perfume.
"You flew alone?"
"I flew with two hundred people and a very rude child." She looked at Tommaso's sweater. "Inside out."
"I know, signora."
"Fix it. You're meeting my granddaughter's people."
Tommaso's mother set her bucket down.
The two of them looked at each other across the cobbles.
One small and sun-browned in an apron.
One small and straight in a camel coat.
"Signora Marchesi," said Tommaso's mother. "We spoke on the telephone."
"For an hour," said Nonna. "You talk too much."
"You talk more."
"I'm older. I've earned it."
"Who's running your company while you fly around Europe on a cane?"
"Pina," said Nonna. "She told me to go. She said I was in her way."
