Chapter 17: All Three
Mikko's POV
I talk when I'm scared, and going up the stairs behind her, I talked the whole way.
"So the thing about a queen bed," I said, "is that it's technically designed for two. I've read about it. There's a limit."
"Mikko," Brit said.
"Not a problem. I'm just flagging the spec. Kou, you'd know. How many people to a queen?"
"Three is within tolerance," Kou said, from behind me.
"There he is," I said. "The man with the data."
Tanner said nothing, because Tanner never says anything on stairs.
Brit stopped at her bedroom door and turned around.
She was still in her porch blanket, and her hair was a mess, and she had a slow warm look on her face that I was starting to know.
"You're talking," she said.
"I know."
"Why?"
"Because I've never done this," I said. "And you three know how this goes, and I'm the youngest, and I don't know what I'm for in a bed that's got a Tanner in it."
Nobody laughed.
I heard how it sounded, small and fast, and wished I could take it back.
Brit took my hand.
"I'm going to tell you what you're for," she said. "Get in the bed."
I got in the bed.
I lay there while the others undressed, and I looked at the ceiling, and my heart was going so hard I could feel it in my teeth.
She dropped the blanket.
She stood at the end of the bed in the lamplight, naked and freckled and soft and warm, forty years old, and she looked at the three of us.
"Tanner, on your back, middle of the bed," she said. "Kou, kneel beside his head. Mikko, behind me."
"Where behind?"
"Right behind. You'll see."
