Chapter 18: Rug
Britta's POV
I had heard it.
I lay with my cheek on Mikko's arm and my eyes shut and heard Tanner say it across me, low.
We need to say it to her before Friday.
Friday was the twenty-fourth.
Friday was the last day on the quote sheet, the day the kitchen would be finished and the crew would load their trucks.
I knew exactly what a man says to a woman before the job is done.
My ex-husband had said it in September, in the hall, with a suitcase.
I did not move.
I did not ask.
I lay between three warm bodies and decided I would take what was in this house for five more days with both hands.
In the morning it rained.
By noon it was coming down steadily on the deck.
The three of them had made pancakes and burned half, and none of us had put on a full set of clothes.
Mikko came into the living room with a Sharpie list down his left forearm in capital letters.
"What is that?" I said.
"Your orders," he said. "I wrote them down. I said I would."
I looked at his arm.
It said FIRST MOUTH, THEN HANDS, then SAY MY NAME, then a smiley face, then NO JOKES (MAYBE).
I laughed until I had to sit down on the sectional.
"Take the blankets off the back of the couch," I said. "And the cushions. Put them on the rug."
"The fireplace is cold," Kou said.
"Then you'll have to work harder."
"Yes, Britta."
They laid out the blankets in front of the cold fireplace in a thick soft square.
It was gray and lovely light, with the rain on the windows.
I stood in the middle of the room and took off my robe.
