Chapter 19: Both of Them

"Tanner," I said.

"That's all I'm saying today," he said, into my hair.

I lay on the rug with the rain on the windows and his heart under my ear, and I did not answer.

Men said a lot of things on a rug.

I put it next to the whisper and went on holding him.

On Monday a plain brown box came to the door with no name on the outside.

I had ordered it the night of the counter, from my phone, in the upstairs bathroom with the door locked and my face on fire.

I hid it in my bag all day at school.

When the crew packed up, I set it on the kitchen island in front of the three of them.

"Is that a present?" Mikko said.

"Open it."

He opened it.

Inside lay a soft black silicone plug the length of my thumb, a tube of lubricant, and a receipt I had forgotten to take out.

Nobody said anything for a long moment.

"Oh," Kou said. "That is for."

"For me," I said. "I bought it myself. I've been practicing for a week."

Mikko dropped the lid.

"Brit," he said. "You went to a store for this."

"I went to a website," I said.

"You researched," Mikko said.

"I did a lot of research."

"I'm going to marry your browser history," Mikko said, and Kou very carefully looked at the ceiling.

Tanner took the plug out of the box and turned it over in his scarred hand.

"Where do you want to do this?" he said.

"On the sectional. Tonight, once you've eaten. I want to take it slowly," I said.

"How slowly?" Tanner said.

"All night, if it takes all night."

After dinner I led them into the living room.

I'd lit two lamps and thrown a clean sheet over the sectional.

I stood in the middle of it all and undressed without hurrying, while they watched.

"Kou," I said.

"Yes."

"You're careful. You'll do the first part. Tanner, hold me. Mikko, you wait."

"I'm very good at waiting," Mikko said, in a hoarse voice. "It's my best skill."

"It is not," Tanner said.
