Chapter 18: The Moon Hall
Nobody stopped us on the steps of the Moon Hall, because nobody was left to.
The guards at the doors wore royal blue and stood very straight and would not meet my eyes.
I knew that look. It was the look of men who have been told something terrible and are pretending they were not.
"Her guard stays at the door," said a servant. "Orders."
Eirik, under his helmet, made a noise.
"He stays," I said, "or I leave."
"The lady is welcome to leave."
"Then I'll tell the Moot why Greywater's daughter was turned away from the Moon Hall."
The man's mouth tightened, and he waved Eirik through.
"Weapons," said the servant.
Eirik handed over a sword. He kept two knives in his boots.
The great hall was nearly empty.
The tiers of the Moot stood empty, rows of white benches under the carved Goddess.
On the dais stood two chairs.
The King's throne was empty. Perdita sat in the Luna's chair beside it, in cream and rose, with her hands folded in her lap.
She looked up and smiled as if I were an old friend who had been delayed by weather.
