Chapter 16: Craig on the Step

Craig was on his knees on the garden path, in front of the Virgin Mary, when I came up the walk.

He had dropped there when he saw me, and he held the cracked black phone in both hands.

The wet from the grass had gone through his trousers at the knee.

At the bottom of the path, by the gate, Raf stood with his arms at his sides and Pio a pace behind him.

Raf had come, then.

He had not touched Craig, and he did not speak.

He only stood, and the stillness of it was worse than a fist.

Craig kept his eyes on my shoes.

"Carla. Please."

"Get up."

"I can't. I'll lose the pension, and the license, and they said they'd call the board."

"Get up off her garden, Craig."

He got up, a little, and sank back.

In the front window the curtain moved and moved again, and I knew a small woman in an apron was watching.

"What do you want?" I said.

"The VP has the wire. They're going to say I took it." He swallowed. "I need you to tell them you agreed. That we talked about it."

"We didn't."

"Say we did. One sentence."

"No."

His face crumpled.

He was a man who had never once been told no by a woman who meant it.

He did not know what to do with his hands.

"Then take this," he said, and thrust out the phone. "It's hers. It's got everything. I'll give you it for nothing."

"Nothing."

"You're my wife."

"Craig."

I held out my hand, and he put the phone in it.
