Chapter 23: May

I didn't open the velvet box.

I didn't need to.

I closed my hand around it and held it, and the café went quiet around me.

"Is that what I think it is?" Jess said.

"Yes."

"The nerve," said Rory's mum. "The absolute nerve of that man."

Rory didn't say anything.

He just watched my face, waiting to see what I needed.

"Will you walk me down to the river?" I said.

The tide was in.

The Thames ran high and gray and fast, and the wind off it was hard enough to sting.

We stood at the railing where he'd almost kissed me in October.

I opened the box once.

Nine years, in a gold band. Our Lady of Sorrows. A boy who told me I'd never have to be afraid of anything.

I closed it.

Then I threw it as far as I could out over the water.

It went further than I expected. My father always said I had an arm on me.

It hit the river with a tiny splash, and the tide took it.

"That's twice now," Rory said. "That ring's been in two rivers."

"Third time, I'll throw him in after it."

He laughed and put his arm around me, and we walked back to the café with the wind behind us.

The wedding was on Saturday, the fifteenth of May.
