Chapter 13: Cellar
The hood came off in a basement that smelled of wine and wet concrete.
Plastic ties bit into my wrists behind a steel post.
Two bare bulbs hung on cords, and racks of bottles ran away into the dark.
They had taken my boots, my coat and my father's revolver.
They had taken the grey folder too, and the dead man's phone.
I counted fourteen steps up to a steel door.
The bolt was on the other side.
This was what a locked door looked like.
Luciano's had a knob that turned from the inside, and I had never once tried it.
I had called that captivity because it was the only word I had.
Now I knew I had been wrong about the word.
I found a sharp bracket on the wine rack behind me and began to saw the tie against it.
I am a nurse, and I can be patient with a wound or a tie for hours.
The bolt scraped at last and boots came down the steps.
Silvio Corvi carried a folding chair under one arm and set it in front of me.
