Chapter 33: The Crown
I knew that look.
It was the one he gave me in the yard at Frostgate before the oath. He didn't ask. He never asked.
He waited.
The whole Council waited with him.
Corvin turned back to the eldest.
"No," he said.
A noise went round the benches.
"Not like that," Corvin said. "Not a crown handed down to the king's brother, because the king's brother was standing nearest."
He shifted our son higher on his shoulder.
"Everything my brother did, he did with a crown on. The Writ. The mill. The Debt. He handed her across a table because a crown said he could." He looked at me. "If I take it, she rules beside me. Not as my wife. Not as my Luna. In her own right, with her own voice, and nobody's leave."
The eldest raised one white eyebrow.
"The Greywold has never crowned a miller's daughter in her own right."
"The Greywold has never had one who fed the north," Corvin said.
The eldest turned to me.
"Clemency Millward. Will you take it?"
I looked at Corvin.
Then at the Council.
Then at the gold circlet lying on the flagstones next to the serpent and the knife.
