Chapter 21: Couch
The sofa came on Valentine's Day, four months late, in the back of the Dependable truck.
Tavon drove it, and he and Darius carried it up the walkway between them, a charcoal three-seater wrapped in clear plastic.
Nothing had come of the headlights at the dental office, though I had checked the schedule twice for who might have been working late.
Tavon set his end down in the living room and wiped his forehead.
"Four months, Amber. I told you. Back order is a lifestyle."
"It's beautiful."
"It's a couch." He looked from me to Darius and back. "I have a dinner date. A woman. With a name and a car. I'm out of here before either of you gets a look in your eyes."
"We don't have a look."
"You've both got a look."
He saluted with his clipboard and was gone.
The door shut.
I turned around and found Darius standing in the middle of the room with his hand inside his jacket.
He had worn his good jacket, the charcoal one he wore to church and to my mother's table.
He looked pale under the brown of his skin.
"Amber," he said. "Sit with me."
We sat on the new sofa, and the plastic crackled under us.
He pulled his hand out of the jacket, and a green velvet box came with it.
With the box came a long cream envelope that slid off his knee and landed on the cushion between us.
He grabbed for it, too late.
I picked it up.
The return address was a training center in Chattanooga, and the seal on the flap had been torn open.
