Chapter 19: Fired on Slack

I called the young engineer while Vivian was still reading the screenshot over my shoulder.

He picked up on the fifth ring.

Behind him I could hear a car door and a man saying, "Badge, please."

"Are they walking you out?" I asked.

"They're walking me out." His voice was very small. "Security has my laptop. My mom has the message. Somebody sent it to her."

"Don't sign anything."

"They want me to sign something."

"Don't sign it. Tell them your lawyer said no. Then go home and eat a real meal."

There was a pause.

"I have a lawyer?"

I looked at Vivian.

She shrugged, ate an almond, and pointed at me.

"You have a lawyer," I said. "Monday morning, nine o'clock. Wear a shirt with a collar. We're going back in."

On Monday the twins' mom took Rosie at eight.

"Is this the Slack boy?" she asked at my door.

"It's the Slack boy."

"Make them cry," she said, and closed the door on me.

He was waiting on the sidewalk outside Kestrel in a pressed blue shirt with the fold lines still in it.

He'd brought his mother.

She was a short woman in a raincoat, holding a tin of shortbread.

"She wanted to come," he said, miserable.

"Good," I said. "Ma'am, you can hold the door."
