I read Blake's text twice.
Then I put the phone face down and finished my client notes.
That night, after Rosie was asleep, I wrote back.
"One hour. Two to three. Your mother drives you. My neighbor is the supervisor. If she says leave, you leave."
The reply came in under a minute.
"Thank you. I'll be on time."
On Saturday morning Cliff was in my backyard at seven with an axe.
I watched him from the kitchen window in my robe with a cup of decaf.
He'd dragged the rocking chair down from the nursery.
The one I'd sat in for twenty minutes in a store at thirty-six weeks.
He looked up at the window and raised his eyebrows.
I nodded.
Vivian came out onto the patio behind him at eight, in her black suit, carrying a bag of marshmallows.
"I told you in March," she said. "Burn it later. It's later."
The chair came apart in eleven pieces.
Cliff stacked them neatly in the fire pit.
"For s'mores," he said. "Tonight. After the guests go."
"That's very healthy," I said.
"I took a parenting course on the internet. It said kids need closure."
"That's not what it said."
"It's what I took from it."
By noon the house was full.
The midwife came with her cookies and a stack of board books.
The twins' mom came with her husband, whom I'd never met.
He was a mild man in glasses who held both twins and said, "I've heard a great deal about the Slack kid."
The chemistry teacher wore the beaker tie.
