We reached the hall in time to see their mother cross the marble in her navy coat.
She stopped in front of Conrad and looked at his nose.
"Who did that?"
"I did," Valen said from the stairs.
"Good," she said.
Then she slapped Conrad across the face, hard enough to ring.
Nobody moved.
"That is for the lie," she said, her voice shaking. "Not for loving the child. For what you did to your brother.
"I am seventy years old. I have eyes. I have watched that child's chin for two years."
Conrad lifted his head.
He did not touch his cheek.
"I know, Mother."
"You will tell her. Together. This week."
"We will."
She turned and opened her arms to Valen, and he walked into them.
When she let him go, she looked over his shoulder at me.
"You are the pancake girl," she said.
"Yes, ma'am."
"Come here."
She hugged me so hard my ribs creaked.
"Posy spoke to me on the telephone on Sunday," she whispered. "She said, 'Carys makes pancakes.'
