Chapter 13: The Shower
"Good?" Tyler said.
He was flat on his back on the rug with his chest still going up and down, and he looked at the phone in my hand.
"Read it," I said.
I held the screen over his face so he could see.
Marlene had numbered everything.
Item one was the garage door at 14 Sandpiper Court, "left raised for extended periods."
Item two was a white Ford Transit Connect with a wheel over the curb.
Item three was noise, and item four was "conduct visible from the public way, including the dining room window."
Item five was the proposed remedy, which was a written apology to the court and "appropriate window coverings."
"I own curtains," I said. "I just don't use them."
Tyler started to laugh, and I felt it all through my stomach, because I was lying on it.
"Why is that good, though?" he said.
"For two weeks she's been a flashlight in my yard."
"Okay," Tyler said.
"Now she's a time and a place. June sixth, I can walk up to that."
"You're going to walk up to it."
"I'm going to walk up to it with my own list," I said.
I dropped the phone on the couch cushion and put my chin on his breastbone.
"But right now I have a different list, and it starts with a shower."
His eyes went to the front door, still open at the end of the hall, and then to me.
"Lena. We're naked on my floor."
"We were."
I got up and found my sundress under the couch.
I held it in front of me for about one second, and then I laughed and let it hang from my fist.
We went down the hall, and the front door was shut.
Somebody had closed it from the outside, and a paper plate sat on the top step under foil.
Two hamburgers were on it, and a pickle, and a napkin that said Happy Memorial Day.
"The retired teacher," Tyler said.
"The whole court is in love with you."
"They're in love with a story," he said.
"Eat the burger, Rusnak."
He ate one standing on his own porch in his jeans and no shirt, and I ate the other, and down at the bend of the court somebody lifted a beer to us.
Nobody called out anything, and that was the kindest thing they could have done.
