Chapter 15: Streetlight
Lena's POV
"Don't move," Tyler said, from the window. "Marlene's at the end of the court."
I was already sitting up in the middle of the bed with the sheet around my waist.
I got up, bare, and went to stand next to him.
He started to pull the curtain across, and I put my hand on his wrist.
"Leave it," I said.
Down at the end of the cul-de-sac, under the streetlight, the silver SUV sat with its engine running.
I could see the little white square of her phone in the gap of the window.
It was pointed straight up at this glass, at the lamp, at the two of us.
I stood there and let it see everything.
Then I lifted my hand and gave her a small, friendly wave.
The SUV's driver window went up, quickly.
The SUV pulled away from the curb, and its taillights went around the bend and were gone.
"You waved," Tyler said.
"She came all this way."
He put his arm around my shoulders and laughed into my hair, and I leaned on him and watched the empty street.
On Friday afternoon I learned to start the Toro.
Tyler stood in my front yard with his arms folded and his mouth shut, and he did not touch it once.
It took me a dozen pulls of the cord.
When it finally caught I screamed, and he clapped, and I mowed the whole front lawn in stripes while the neighbors watched from their porches.
Greg had never let me near that machine.
At two in the morning, I was in my robe on the front steps with the whole house dark behind me.
The lawn lay under the cul-de-sac's one streetlight, a green, cut, silver-edged square with the smell of grass rising off it.
