Chapter 31: Nineteen
Zeke drove the blue pickup through every stop sign in the old town.
Mavis sat in the back with my head in her lap, timing the contractions on the diner's egg timer and swearing at every pothole by name.
"That pothole's been there since 1994. You useless town..."
"Mavis."
"Breathe, honey. I'm breathing for both of us."
The island clinic had one delivery room.
It had pale green walls and a window over the harbor, and at three-forty in the morning it had me in it.
The doctor came in with her hair still wet from the shower.
"I told you," she said, pulling on gloves. "She likes an entrance."
The twins got as far as the waiting room and were told, firmly, to stay there.
"We're family," said the older one.
"Then be family in a chair," said the nurse.
Mavis took my left hand.
Zeke took my right.
The doctor looked at him over her mask.
"And you are?"
He opened his mouth.
He looked at me.
He'd promised not one lie.
"Stay," I said, before he could find the words. "He stays."
