Chapter 14: The Seven Chairs
Harrison's POV
My mother stopped at the edge of the lamplight and looked at the people in her library.
She looked at Rosalind, and the card on the table, and me.
Then she looked past me, to the dark between the shelves, where a wheelchair stood with my wife in it.
"Lucy, darling," she said. "You should be in bed."
"I'm in my building," Lucy said.
She said it quietly, with both hands on the arms of the chair.
My mother's smile did not move, but something behind it did.
"Constance," Rosalind said, and her voice cracked. "He has papers from a bitter old man. He's trying to take Conrad off the stone."
"I know, dear. Sit down."
My mother crossed to the table and picked up the stonecutter's card.
She read it without any expression at all, and she set it down again.
"We will not do this at midnight in front of a night guard," she said. "The board meets tomorrow at two. Bring your paper, Harrison, and we'll treat it properly."
"I will."
"You will regret how you do this."
"I already regret everything else," I said.
I wheeled Lucy out myself, with Margaret walking at my elbow, and no one stopped us.
At the doors Lucy turned her head and looked back once at the roof.
She did not say anything, and neither did I.
At noon the next day I put the car seat into Margaret's Volvo.
The nurse had signed Ada out of the unit with a hat the size of a teacup, and Lucy walked beside the cart with one hand on the rail.
I kissed my daughter's head, with Lucy in the room, and I drove to the board.
The boardroom was on the thirty-first floor, with a walnut table and seven chairs on each side.
