Chapter 21: The Cellar Door

"No," I said.

It came out before I could stop it.

Sabine stared at me.

"What do you mean, no? It's a wine cellar."

"I don't like cellars."

"Since when?"

Since a night ten years from now.

"There's a camera in the sitting room," Sabine said, fast and low. "She checks Dad's app. There's one on the back door now too, she had it put in Monday. This is the only room in the house she can't see or hear."

Out in the garden, somebody laughed at something my mother said.

Sabine glanced at the window and then back at me.

"Do you want her or not?"

I put my hand on the doorframe.

The oak was cool and smooth under my palm, worn by a hundred years of hands.

I stepped through.

The stairs were stone, steep and narrow, with an iron rail on one side.

Fourteen steps.

I knew it was fourteen.

I'd counted them once, from the bottom, upside down.

My knees went soft on the fifth one.

I gripped the rail and kept going.

At the bottom, the cellar opened into a long low room with brick arches and racks of dusty bottles to the ceiling.
