Chapter 6: The Refill
I turned the phone around and set it on the tablecloth, face up, between the coffee pot and the croissants.
"Read it," I said to my mother.
She didn't move.
The woman beside me leaned over to read it.
Her lips moved, and then she slowly put down her fork and pushed her own teacup away from her plate.
Two others did the same.
Sabine's hand had gone to her throat.
For one second she looked at my mother, not at me.
Then she burst into tears.
"I made that tea," she sobbed. "I made it with my own hands, which means someone put something in it after. Coralie carried it. Coralie held it the whole time."
"You drank it," I said. "Two sips. You knew exactly how many."
"Labs make mistakes," my father said. "Private labs especially. Who is this, some friend of Wainright's?"
"Then test it again," I said. "Anywhere you like. I'll pay."
My mother picked up her napkin, folded it once, and laid it beside her plate.
"We're leaving," she said to my father.
"We just got here," he said.
"Quentin."
They left.
Sabine went with them, still crying, leaning on my father's arm.
At the door she looked back over her shoulder.
Her eyes were completely dry.
On Monday morning, Gran's lawyer came to Ambrose's dining room with two of his paralegals and a fountain pen.
Gran signed her new will at nine-fifteen, with the morning sun on the table and Ambrose's coffee going cold beside her.
She left her forty percent of Haverhill Marine to me.
