Chapter 13: The Check
The pool was clear on a Sunday, and I hated it.
It was the first Sunday in four months I had looked out the back door and seen the bottom.
There was the drain, and the little black line of tile, and a single leaf lying flat on the Baja shelf.
I stood there in my robe with the coffee and felt cheated.
Five days earlier, on Tuesday the twenty-eighth, he had come at 9:40, as I told him to.
He skimmed and he brushed and he shocked the water, and he did not look at the house once.
I watched him through the kitchen window with my arms crossed.
He did not go near the side yard, and he did not touch the gray box.
At 10:30 exactly, on the booked hour, he packed the net into the truck and left.
We said "Morning" to each other, and that was the whole conversation.
I had never been so angry at a man for behaving correctly.
On Wednesday at ten to five, I put on my running shoes and went around the side of the house in the dark.
I stood by the sprinkler controller with a flashlight in my teeth and a screwdriver from the kitchen drawer.
