Chapter 8: Live

The studio was colder than it looked on television.

A makeup artist dabbed powder on my nose and told me to breathe.

"Last chance to say no," Levi said from the doorway. He had come in his charcoal suit, and he stood there with his hands in his pockets.

"Are you going to tell me not to?"

"No. I'm going to tell you that you don't have to be good at this. You only have to be true."

"That's a terrible thing to say to someone about to be on live TV."

"I'll be in the wings," he said. "If you want to leave, look at me."

I walked out under the lights.

Lorna was already on the couch in her pale blue blazer.

When she saw me, her face lit up with a joy so convincing that I almost believed it.

"Cora! Sweetheart, I was so afraid you wouldn't come."

"Hello, Mom."

The host leaned in. "Cora, thank you for joining us. Your mother says she's heartbroken. What would you like to say to her?"

I sat down on the far edge of the couch.

My hands were shaking, so I folded them over the bracelet in my pocket.

"I'd like to say thank you," I said. "For twenty-two years of food and a roof."

Lorna's eyes shone. "Oh, baby."

"And I'd like to ask a question."

"Anything."

"Where is Danny buried?"

The smile stayed on Lorna's face. Nothing else moved.

"What an odd thing to ask."

"You made me take flowers there every March third. I'd like to know where it is."

"Mount Calvary Cemetery. You know that."

"I do. I've been there every year of my life." I looked straight at her. "Is there a grave under the stone? A burial record? A funeral home that did the service?"
