Chapter 14: Wen Fights Back

I told Wen at noon.

She was in the canteen with a tray and she put it down and didn't eat any of it.

"An invoice."

"Yes."

"On department funds."

"Yes."

"Your tools."

"All of it. The lamp, the clamps, the roll. My grandfather's awl."

She sat there with her hands on the table.

"Who signed the invoice?"

"I don't know."

"Who's on the arts division account?"

"Lu Ming is on the donor board."

She picked up her phone.

"What are you doing?"

"Getting the receipts."

"Wen, the tools are gone. The office has them."

"Not those receipts."

She stood up and left her tray.

I didn't see her for the rest of the day.

At four the next afternoon she called me.

"Come to building C. Fourth floor. The department office."

"Wen."

"Come now."

The fourth floor had the economics department on it and a long corridor with a carpet.

The office at the end had glass walls.

There were already five people in it when I got there.

Wen, standing at the end of a long table.

Two faculty members behind it, one with a laptop open.

Lu Ming, sitting at the side of the table.

And Lu Chen, standing by the window with his coat on.
