Chapter 17: The Laundromat
Mateo's POV
I picked the laundromat because it was the only place in Denver at two in the morning where I knew all the rules.
I did my own wash there every Wednesday.
It was a long bright room on Federal with a row of front-loading dryers down one wall and a folding table down the middle.
An attendant slept behind the counter in a plastic chair, with a paperback open on his chest and his mouth slightly open.
The fluorescent lights hummed, and the vending machine hummed, and the dryers turned in their round glass doors.
"This is your idea of romance," Paulina said.
She stood in the door in her coat, with a laundry bag on her shoulder.
It was full of chef's whites, and she had insisted on bringing it.
"I wash on Wednesdays," I said. "You said I pick the place."
"I did."
I nodded at the counter.
"He doesn't wake up," I said. "I've been coming here for a year."
"You're sure."
"He's been asleep since the first dryer I ever used."
She laughed, low, and walked past me to the machines.
She loaded her whites into a washer with brisk hands, because she did it a hundred times a week.
She fed it quarters and slammed the lid.
Then she turned around with her back against it and crossed her arms.
"Well?"
I put my bag down on the folding table.
I had spent four days thinking about this, in the Camry and the basement and on the stairs at the training center.
I had spent four days thinking how many times I had waited for her to say what she wanted.
