Chapter 19: The Car Wash
"Your car needs a bath," I said.
"My car is fine."
"Your car smells like french fries, popcorn and us."
Mateo sniffed once and closed his mouth.
"Fair," he said.
It was eleven on Sunday night, and the restaurant was closed.
The only place in southwest Denver still lit up was a car wash on Evans.
A sign over the entrance promised ULTIMATE SHINE in blue letters.
A machine at the gate asked for eleven dollars, and he fed it his card without letting me pay.
Then a screen lit up with a cartoon car and some instructions.
"Shift to neutral," Mateo read. "Foot off the brake. Hands off the wheel."
"Do what it says."
"Paulina, there's a camera on the booth."
"There's a camera on the whole city," I said. "Do what it says."
He put it in neutral.
He took his foot off the brake and his hands off the wheel and held them up in the air.
A steel track caught the front tire and pulled us into the tunnel.
The doors closed behind us.
Blue light filled the car.
A curtain of soap came down over the glass in a white sheet, and the whole world went to foam.
Water hammered the roof, and the roar rose around us until I could not hear the engine or my own breath.
I leaned across the console and shouted in his ear.
"Back seat!" I shouted.
"What?"
"Back seat! Now!"
He understood.
He went over the headrest with a grunt, and I climbed after him and kicked the door shut behind me, though it was already shut.
We were in the back of a Camry, in the dark and the blue and the roar.
