Chapter 21: Table Fourteen
"Thank you," I said, from the shelf, to the sliver of kitchen light. "Give us a minute."
"Take two, Chef," the porter said, to the wall.
He closed the door.
I heard the mop bucket roll away across the tile, and a man's voice, very faint, say something to himself that sounded like a laugh.
Mateo put his forehead on my shoulder and shook.
On Friday at seven-thirty, table fourteen was set for two.
It was by the window, the best table in the house, and I had put it there on purpose.
My ex-husband had booked it under his own name, and when he walked in he was wearing a blazer and the woman in the white puffer coat.
The dining room was full.
It was a Friday in November, and every table was turned, and the bar was three deep with people waiting.
I was in the kitchen in my whites, with a ticket rail full of orders, and I did not look up when the host leaned in and said, "Chef, fourteen's here."
"Send the halibut," I said.
"They ordered the chicken."
"Then send the chicken."
I plated it myself.
I put it in the window and watched the runner take it, and I went on cooking.
I made two more tables of pasta and a duck.
Ten minutes later the runner came back through the swinging door with the plate in her hand and her eyes wide.
"He wants the manager," she said.
"What's wrong with it?"
"He says it's dry. He says it loudly."
I wiped my hands on the towel at my belt.
I looked down the line at my cooks, who had stopped moving.
The second cook was holding a pan in midair.
"Go ahead, Chef," he said.
I took the plate.
I walked out through the swinging door into the dining room with the chicken in my hand.
Table fourteen was in the window.
