Chapter 11: The Diner

After the Houston show, Dougie took us all to a diner.

It was a twenty-four-hour place on the edge of a freeway, with a pink neon sign and red booths.

The waitress did not recognize anyone.

Bev said it was the first time in nine months I'd sat in a public room with the man I sang for.

"And nobody's screaming," Dougie said, with enormous satisfaction. "That's what a Tuesday's for."

I sat in the corner of the booth with Fraser on my right and Bev across from me.

His thigh was warm against mine all down its length.

Nobody in the diner looked at us twice.

I thought, this is what it's like to be a person.

The waitress brought coffee and slid a plate of pie in front of Dougie without being asked.

"You look like a pie man," she said.

"I'm a man of vision," Dougie told her.

Fraser picked up the menu, and wrote on a napkin in his cramped left hand, and pushed it toward her.

Eggs. Over easy. Please.

The waitress read it.

"Honey, you can just tell me."

"He can't talk," Dougie said, quickly. "Laryngitis."

"Poor baby," the waitress said. "I'll bring you tea."

I pressed my knee against Fraser's and felt him shake.

"Tell the story," Bev said to Dougie. "The cat."

"No."

"Tell the cat story."

"There's no cat story. There's an ex-wife and a cat, and the cat won."
