Chapter 11: The Will

The old lawyer sat in the middle of the reception tent with his briefcase on his knees.

He had asked for it to be done in front of everyone.

"Your mother was specific," he said to me. "The will was to be read aloud, on the day you married, in front of your father and a witness who is not family. I have the sheriff."

The sheriff raised his glass of lemonade from the back table.

"Happy to."

Two hundred guests had stayed.

Nobody touched the champagne.

Laurence stood behind my chair with one hand on its back.

My father sat across from me with his jaw clenched, and Marlene sat beside him in her navy dress, very straight.

Shelby had her arms around herself at the end of the row.

Brett was gone.

"This will was written sixteen years ago," the lawyer said. "Mrs. Anne Whalley was ill at the time. She asked me to read this paragraph exactly."

He put on his glasses and unfolded a sheet of yellow paper.

"To my daughter, Delaney, I leave the house on Pike Lake with everything in it. I also leave her my one third share of Whalley Dairy Distributing, which I held from before my marriage."

There was a rustle in the tent.

"These pass to her outright on the day she marries. Until that day, my husband will hold them for her as trustee. He may live in the house. He may not sell it or borrow against the shares. If he does, the act is void."

My father had gone gray.

"One third of Whalley Dairy," someone whispered behind me.

"That makes her the largest shareholder," someone else said, "after Sheldon."
