Chapter 19: The Altar
Veyron cut through the camp.
Isabeau ran toward him with Wenna on her heels.
Ox carts and cook fires blurred past, and men in white tabards scattered before the horned shadow in the dark.
He reached her at the foot of the field chapel.
It was a tall white tent pitched beside the Wheel, with a lantern swinging in front.
He caught her in both arms, and she felt him tremble.
His armor was split.
Smoke rose from his shoulders, and the black vein stood out on his neck now, thick as a rope, pulsing.
"You're alive," she said.
"Barely." His voice was a whisper. "Torvin's holding the hill. I had an hour."
"You should be in bed!"
"I was." He tried to smile, and his knees went.
She caught him, and they went down together through the tent flap, and Wenna dropped the canvas behind them and stood guard outside.
The tent was bare.
At its heart stood the altar of the Pale Flame, a waist-high slab of white marble.
It was laid with a cloth and a pair of candles.
It was the same kind of altar where Isabeau had taken her vows at fifteen.
She laid him on the floor beside it.
