Chapter 30: Measure Twice
For a month I didn't draw a single line.
I drafted dresses for sixty-one brides that February.
I sketched sleeves for a girl from Somerville and a bodice for a nurse from Milton.
But every night I sat down at the cutting table with a clean sheet of pattern paper, and every night it stayed clean.
"You know whose it is," Shauna said.
"I don't."
"You know whose it is, and you're scared to cut it."
"I can't cut a dress for a body I haven't measured."
"Oh my God," Shauna said, and went back to her machine.
On the first Saturday in March, I moved upstairs.
It took one van.
His van.
Aidan carried my bed frame up four flights by himself and wouldn't let Evan help.
Evan carried the crib.
They didn't speak once on the stairs, but they held the door for each other every time.
Shauna had painted the top floor the color of buttercream.
It had two bedrooms and a kitchen with a window over Tremont Street.
From that window I could see straight into Aidan's.
By six it was done.
Gran took the baby home to Southie for the night.
"Your first night in your own house," she said. "You should have it to yourself."
"I'll miss her."
"You'll survive it," Gran said, and looked at Aidan, and said, "Huh."
Then everybody left but him.
We sat on the floor of my new kitchen with our backs against the cabinets and ate fish and chips out of the paper.
The radiator ticked.
The whole apartment smelled like fresh paint.
"I still haven't started your commission," I said.
