Chapter 22: The Door Is Clean

The general lifted the lid of the gray box himself.

On top lay a strip of paper no wider than my hand, cut with a razor along one edge.

A sound went through the field.

Under the strip lay a handwritten page.

"And an order," the general said. "Burn the custody record. M.R."

He unbuckled the holster and set it in the sergeant's hands.

As the two military police closed in on either side, he turned his head and found me in the front row.

"Your father was weak," he said.

"My father walked into a room and said your name," I said. "You never will."

They walked him down the steps and across the grass, through three hundred soldiers who parted without a sound.
