Chapter 12: Bait

I found Camille where Hattie said she would be, alone in the chapel at six o'clock on Sunday evening.

She sat in the front pew with her coat folded beside her.

The candles in the side aisles were lit, and the long stained windows had gone dark gray.

She looked small there, which surprised me.

"Aileen," she said, without turning. "I thought you might come."

I walked down the aisle and stopped two pews behind her.

"Your father was at the hearing."

"He's on the board. It's his job."

"He looked sad."

"He's a sentimental man." She finally turned her head. Her face was calm and lovely. "I told him you were a brave girl who needed discipline. He agreed."

I held the back of the pew.

"You photographed me at the boathouse."

"A friend did."

"You sent Teddy to the boys' house with the housemaster, and Nash was alone with a textbook."

"Did I?" She sounded interested. "I'm sure I don't know what you mean."

"You hired him."

For the first time Camille's mouth did something real.

It curved up at one corner, and it was ugly.

"Is that what he told you?" she said. "I'm sure it was a sweet speech."

"I heard you in the stairwell on my first night."

That landed.

She was quiet for a long moment, and the candles ticked.
