Chapter 16: What the Board Heard
The old director did not raise his voice.
He did not need to, because the ballroom had gone so quiet that I could hear the chandelier crystals tick.
"Broderick," he said. "In thirty years, I have never asked you this in front of the board."
"Sit down, please."
"When you started this company, you told us it would go to your son."
"This is not the time."
"Every year since, at every annual meeting, you told us it would go to your son. We voted on that assumption. We borrowed against it."
He turned a page in the folder in front of him, though I don't think he was reading.
"Tonight you've thrown your son out of the company," he said. "You've been shown to have lied to a family, to a woman on your staff, and to this board about a merger."
"I deny..."
"So I'll ask the thing we've avoided since the day you founded us." He folded his hands. "Who comes after you, Broderick?"
Nobody breathed.
Broderick stood at the lectern with the microphone dead in his fist.
