Sunday dinner on Birch Lane was a roast chicken, green beans, and a tablecloth Ansel's mother had been saving for a good week.
Torin's father sat at the head of the table with a glass of cider and a grin he could not keep down.
"Captain," he said, for the fourth time.
"My son is captain of the Pioneers."
"Dad."
"I'm allowed to say it."
"You said it in the driveway."
"I'll say it at the table."
Ansel passed the green beans and said nothing.
He sat across from Torin in his usual chair, with his grey sweater on and his glasses slid down his nose.
His mother, across the corner, kept looking at him with her head tilted.
She had come off another night shift and looked tired in a happy way.
Under the tablecloth, a socked foot found his ankle.
