Chapter 9: The Audit
Dennis Kruk was in the courtyard at five to nine, in a fleece vest with the management company's logo on the chest, holding a clipboard against his stomach.
I was on my way to the train with my laptop bag over my shoulder and a banana in my coat pocket.
Rafa stood two steps from him with his hands in his jacket and his face closed.
"Ms. Cieslak," Dennis said, pronouncing it wrong, with a z. "Just who I wanted. Do you have a minute?"
"I have eight."
"Then I'll go fast. Going forward the company is auditing every unit's maintenance history, and I like to do it in person. It's more respectful," Dennis said.
"For whom?"
He smiled at me.
"For the tenant," he said.
He led us up the back stairs.
I followed with Rafa a step behind me, and I could feel him there.
On the second landing Dennis stopped and flipped the clipboard to a printed sheet.
"Here's what I don't understand," he said. "Unit 3R. Kitchen sink. Seven callouts since March."
