Chapter 8: Blind
He came in on Saturday night with a white paper bag from the corner drugstore, and he set it on my nightstand.
"What's that?" I said.
"Something I bought."
"From Walgreens?" I said.
"From the little one on Diversey, the cashier asked if I wanted a gift receipt."
I laughed so hard I had to sit down on the bed.
He waited with the tooth showing until I was done, and then he took a folded red bandana out of his back pocket and held it up.
"Stand up," he said.
I stood.
He walked around behind me and laid the bandana across my eyes, soft cotton that smelled of soap and sawdust, and tied it at the back of my head with two quick knots.
The room went dark.
I heard everything at once, the radiator, my own breath, the creak of the floorboard where he stepped.
"Can you see?"
"No," I said.
"Good."
His hands came onto my shoulders and I felt them through my whole body.
He undressed me slowly, with long pauses, with his mouth on each new piece of skin, and each time I felt him move I had to guess where he would go.
He lifted my arms and drew off my shirt.
He knelt and slid down my pants and kissed the inside of my knee, and my hand shot out for his shoulder and found it.
"Good," he said. "Hold there."
He walked me backward.
I felt the mattress against the back of my legs, and he sat me down, and I heard the clink of the jute.
"Hands up."
I put them up, and he took them.
He crossed my wrists above my head and tied them to the top rail of the iron headboard with the rope, wrap by wrap.
I felt each knot snug against the bone.
I couldn't see his face.
I couldn't see the room.
