Chapter 7: Rope

He knocked at nine, and when I opened the door he was holding the coil of jute rope in one hand.

"You said tomorrow," he said.

"I know what I said."

"I wanted to be sure you meant it," he said.

"Come in, Rafa."

He came in, and I locked the door myself.

In the bedroom he put the rope on the bed and sat on the edge of the mattress and looked at me.

I stood in front of him in my slip with my heart going so hard I could feel it in my teeth.

"Take that off."

I took it off.

"Kneel on the bed. In the middle. Face me."

I climbed onto the bed and knelt, with my knees apart on the comforter and my hands on my thighs, naked.

He stayed where he was, fully dressed, with the rope in his lap.

"I'm going to show you what I do," he said. "Before I do it."

"All right."

He picked up the rope and ran it slowly through his hands, and I could hear the rasp of it.

"It's three strands. It's rough, so it'll bite a little. That's the point of it. You feel it, you know where you are."

"I'm not afraid of rough."

"I know you aren't." He stood and came around behind me and knelt on the bed against my back. "Give me your hands. Behind you. Wrists crossed."

I put my hands behind me and crossed them at the small of my back.

He took the middle of the rope and laid it over my wrists.

I felt it, coarse and warm, with a faint prickle against the skin.

"This is the first wrap," he said into my ear. "Around, and around again. Not tight. It lies on the bone, flat. See, it doesn't dig."

"I can feel it."

"Good. Now I cross it here, between your wrists, and pull it through. That's the knot that holds it. That's all it is."

His fingers worked quickly, and I felt each one, the wrap, the cross, the little snug pull of the final knot.

It took him a minute.

"Test it," he said.

I pulled.

My wrists would not part.

The rope held them together at the base of my spine, snug and absolute.
