Chapter 19: Walk-Ins

By eight in the morning every door in Patterson General was shut but one.

The steel shutters were down over the bay, the dock, the side doors and the tunnel.

Each chain hung in two pieces, cut clean, and none of them would ever go back up.

Only the main lobby doors stood open, wide, onto Eastern Avenue.

Pennington stood in front of them on the sidewalk in his white coat.

Forty fighters from the Green stood behind him in the street, with their bands glowing.

Calvin looked at the shutter over the bay and cracked his knuckles.

"I can go through any of those," he said.

"I know you can. We voted to stay."

"I'm just saying."

Pennington raised his voice so the lobby could hear him.

"Anybody green may leave by this door," he said. "The Green will take you before dark. Nobody will stop you."

"Anybody who isn't green is expectant. I'm sorry. That isn't my rule."

Nobody in the lobby moved toward the doors.

The man in the orange coat sat down on the bottom step and folded his arms.
