Chapter 16: The Bridge in Daylight

The Frost Bridge was narrower than it had been in her cards.

Liora stood at the near end of it at noon, with the sun on the snow and the wind pulling at her green hood.

It was eighty paces of grey stone, with parapets no higher than her waist.

The drop on either side made her knees go soft.

Far below, a black river ran between walls of ice.

"The Duke crosses here alone," the captain said behind her. "He has done it for twelve years."

"Alone, on purpose," said Isaure.

"Alone because I said so," said Bastien.

She had told him Marguerite's plan over breakfast, word for word, and he had eaten nothing and said less.

Now he walked out ahead of them on the stones with his hands behind his back.

Liora followed him, and Isaure and the captain came last.

At the far end the bridge widened into a flat shelf of rock, with a squat stone post in the middle of it.

"That's where she stands," said Bastien, not turning around.

"The woman with the cup. The priestess puts it on the post when she has to rest her arms."
