Chapter 23: After the Snow
Bastien took the oath on the snowy shelf with blood drying on his coat.
Nobody told him to wait for the physician, and nobody would have dared.
Liora lifted the lid of the tin cup.
The wine had cooled a little in the wind, and it still smelled of cloves and honey.
He took it from her with both hands, the whole one and the one with two fingers missing, and drank it in three long swallows.
"I take the north," he said, and his voice carried across the gorge.
"I take its mines and its barons and its winters. I will hold them until I die."
"And not before," Liora said under her breath.
"And not before," Bastien added, in the same loud voice, and a laugh went through the barons like wind through grass.
Then two hundred of them knelt in the snow.
The green-coated baron knelt first, and he did not meet her eyes.
The grey knight sat down on the post with her bad arm in her lap.
"That was the worst day of my whole life," she said to nobody, "and I'd do it again."
