Chapter 16: Noodles
"Come and eat," Master Gu said. "It's getting cold."
He stood in the pantry door with a ladle in his scarred hand and flour on his apron, the way he stood every morning.
Linyuan did not move from the crate.
"Master Gu," he said. "Where did you get this set?"
"Ah." Gu looked at the lid with the nailed slip and the red square seal.
He did not look surprised.
He looked like a man whose tooth has ached for a year, and the tooth-puller has finally come.
"Come and eat," he said again. "I'll tell you while you do. I won't run, boy. Where would I go?"
Linyuan followed him, because he did not know what else to do.
He thought of shouting for the kitchen boys.
He thought of how much they all loved this man.
Gu led him through the back passage to a small room behind the great oven.
It was Gu's own room, with a narrow cot, a table, and a stove no bigger than a hat.
A pot of water was already steaming.
Gu pulled noodles from a bin with his big hands, slapped and stretched them with a smooth beating rhythm, and dropped them in.
"Sit."
Linyuan sat.
Gu ladled out a bowl of plain broth with a green onion and a spoonful of chili oil.
He laid a pair of chopsticks across the rim.
