Chapter 11: Mine Tonight

"It will not hold," Drake said, scrolling through the claim. "The release names fourteen days, not conduct. There is no morality clause in the document I witnessed."

"They added one."

"They did. Their lawyers will be explaining that to a judge by Friday."

Demi let out a short laugh.

It surprised her.

It was the first time in two lives she had laughed at anything the Pellhams did.

Drake looked up from the screen and watched her do it.

"What?" she said.

"Nothing," he said. "Do that again."

Thunder cracked over the meadow, close and sudden.

The first heavy drops hit the canvas.

Then the sky opened, and the rain came down so hard the generator's hum disappeared under it.

Drake went to the tent flap and looked out at a meadow gone to mud.

"The crew is moving everyone to the lodge," he said. "Your camera operator went with them. I told her your camera stays off until morning."

"Why?"

"Because you have been on for four days, and you have not been alone once."

Demi stood.

The lamp swung on its hook and threw their shadows across the canvas.

She crossed the tent in three steps and stopped in front of him.

"You are on the mountain," she said. "You said you would not be."

"I did."

"You said exclusive footage."

"I know what I said."

"You lied twice."

"Three times," Drake said. "I have been counting."

She put her bandaged hand flat on his chest.

His heart was going hard under the wet shirt.

"I am not doing anything for anyone tonight," Demi said. "Not for my family, not for the cameras, not for the show. This is mine. Do you understand?"

"Yes."

"Then kiss me."

He did.

It was not gentle.

His hand came up into her hair and held the back of her head.

His mouth was hot and rough and hungry.

She kissed him back with everything she had kept shut for twenty years.
