Chapter 5: All Hands

Thursday morning, security took my badge at the elevator.

"Orders from the chairman," the guard said. He wouldn't look at me. "You're to wait in the lobby for the all-hands."

The lobby was full again.

Every floor had come down. Four hundred people stood under the glass atrium with phones in their hands.

The new video was on the screen above the reception desk, looping.

Me, on my knees in the dark, with a flash going off.

Richard stood on the second-floor landing, one hand on the rail.

Lydia stood beside him in a cream suit, her eyes red.

"Colleagues," Richard said. His voice carried without effort. "Two days ago some of you saw a private matter made public. I regret that. Today I regret something worse."

He lifted a hand toward the screen.

"This woman has worked in my building for six years. She has had access to the board's files, my son's calendar and the company's accounts. She has been photographing them at night."

A hum went through the atrium.

"Security found two hundred pages on her phone this morning," Richard said. "She will be handed to the police today for corporate espionage."

That was a lie. They had not touched my phone.

Lydia put a hand over her mouth.

"Hazel," she said, in a trembling voice that reached the back wall. "Why? We trusted you."

I stood in the middle of four hundred people and every one of them was waiting for me to cry.
