Chapter 16: Weak to Strong
They reached the ridge above Cold Ford as the sun cleared the pines.
Below them the whole camp was moving. Tents were down, carts loaded, and the black banner stood already on the far bank.
The villagers stood in lines of ten on the shingle, with iron on their wrists, waiting to be driven into the water.
Ellory counted them twice.
Two hundred and eleven, with the twelve safe behind him.
"Four hundred riders," Lowen whispered. "We've got a sword each and a bad plan."
"We've got a god," Gwenith said.
"He's not allowed to burn anything."
"I am allowed," Saren said, "to hold a number of men by the throat."
"That's the plan, then." Ellory wiped his palms on his trousers. "You hold, and I sing."
"Sing what?"
"The first half of the Hush. It's all I know."
Gwenith put her pipe away. Her face was grey and set.
"It's what Aldwyn would have started with," she said. "Go on, lad. It's yours."
