Chapter 15: The Box

I did not wait until night.

I told Torin I wanted the box, and he sent Kjell running.

Ten minutes later it lay on the war table, with the wooden wolves pushed aside to make room.

It was plain oak, the size of a bread loaf, bound in dull iron.

My father had carried it to every Moot of his life.

"Brage might be lying," Kjell said.

"He is a liar," I said. "He's not clever enough to lie about this."

Torin stood across the table with his scarred arms folded, saying nothing.

He had let me choose this time as well.

I lifted the lid.

The ledger lay on top, with its stubbed final page.

Under it were a few fat pencils and the little brass seal my father used for his letters.

I took everything out and set it in a row.

Then I laid my hand flat on the bottom of the box and measured with my thumb.

"It's too shallow," I said.

"What?"

"The outside is a hand and a half deep. The inside isn't."
